Wedding photographer in the Zillertal

A wedding photographer in the Zillertal is a photographer who documents your wedding day across this Tyrolean valley — from getting ready in a Mayrhofen or Fügen hotel, through the civil or church ceremony, to the portraits on a meadow and the dancing in a wooden Stube. Coverage usually runs eight to ten hours, the photographer helps build a timeline around the light and the drive times between villages, and you receive an edited online gallery a few weeks later.

The legal part is handled by several registry offices rather than one. The Standesamtsverband Mayrhofen, at Hauptstraße 409, serves Brandberg, Finkenberg, Hippach, Mayrhofen and Schwendau; the municipality of Tux has a Standesamt of its own, and Fügen and Zell am Ziller each run a registry association for the front of the valley. You may register at any Standesamt in Austria and marry at another, and because the eligibility check is valid for at most six months, about half a year ahead is a sensible time to start. For a church or a blessing, the Maria Rast pilgrimage church on the Hainzenberg above Zell is a favourite: the Zillertal Arena tourism office describes it as popular for wedding ceremonies, with a chapel completed in 1659 that miners from the nearby gold mine once supported.

The pilgrimage church stands on the Hainzenberg above Zell am Ziller, in the old gold-mining district — a place with its own story for the ceremony and the family group.

A cable car ride turns into an easy second location for couple portraits on open alpine pasture at about 2,000 metres, then back down for dinner.

Pine panelling, a tiled stove and low windows give warm light for speeches and the cake, whatever the weather is doing outside.

Good to know

  • Book the photographer for at least two locations only if they lie in the same part of the valley; on a summer Saturday the valley road between Fügen and Mayrhofen carries heavy holiday traffic.
  • Ask the registry office whether a ceremony outside its own room is possible; it decides whether the chosen place is suitable.
  • In June and July the sun sets at around 9.10 pm, but the steep valley sides put the village in shade much earlier — plan portraits for the hour after the ceremony or up on a plateau.

Frequently asked questions

Which registry office do we use for a wedding in the Zillertal?

That depends on the village: Mayrhofen’s Standesamt association covers Brandberg, Finkenberg, Hippach, Mayrhofen and Schwendau, Tux has its own, and Fügen and Zell am Ziller have associations too. A Zillertal wedding photographer can tell you which one fits your venue.

Can we marry in the church at Maria Rast?

Maria Rast on the Hainzenberg is often chosen for church weddings and blessings in the Zillertal. A church ceremony is arranged with the parish, and the legally binding civil wedding still takes place at a Standesamt.

How long does a wedding photographer stay on the day?

Most couples book eight to ten hours in the Zillertal, from getting ready to the first dance. A shorter package covering the ceremony, family groups and portraits suits smaller weddings or an afternoon civil ceremony.
