Carinthia’s capital sits at the eastern end of the Wörthersee, one of Austria’s warmest swimming lakes, with a southern climate and a hint of Italy in the air. Lakeside villas, wooden jetties and boathouses line the shore all the way to Pörtschach and Velden, and the church of Maria Wörth on its small peninsula is one of the best-known views in the country.

The Wörthersee is a classic summer wedding region, with ceremonies in lakeside hotels, villa gardens and churches, and many couples add a boat ride or a sunset shoot on a jetty. When to go

From late spring to early autumn the lake turns turquoise, the water is warm enough to swim and evenings on the jetties are long — peak wedding season, with July and August weekends booked early. September is calmer and still mild. In winter, the Advent markets in Klagenfurt and the lakeside Advent in Velden make for atmospheric family and couple sessions.
