Zell am See sits on a small peninsula in Lake Zell, with the Schmittenhöhe rising behind the town and the glaciated Kitzsteinhorn above neighbouring Kaprun. Within a short drive you have a lakeside promenade, alpine meadows, high-mountain reservoirs and year-round snow — a rare mix for one location.

International visitors come here for summer holidays and winter skiing alike, and many combine their trip with a couple or family shoot.     The park and promenade in front of the old town look straight across the water to the mountains. Calm and easy to reach, especially early in the morning.

    From the opposite side of the lake you see the whole town with its church tower and the mountains behind — the classic Zell am See view, with soft light in the evening.

    Schmittenhöhe

    A cable car runs from town to the summit plateau, with wide views over the lake and towards the Hohe Tauern peaks. Good for sunset sessions in summer and snow scenes in winter.

    Kitzsteinhorn glacier

    Above Kaprun, the cable cars reach a viewing platform at around 3,000 metres with snow for most of the year. Plan warm layers and check the weather on the day.

    Turquoise reservoirs surrounded by peaks, reached by bus and an inclined lift in the summer season only. Dramatic and spacious, ideal for elopements and couple portraits.

When to go

Summer brings swimming weather at the lake, green meadows and access to the reservoirs and high-alpine roads. Autumn has clear air and golden larches. In winter the town turns into a ski resort, the Kitzsteinhorn offers reliable snow, and in cold years parts of the lake freeze — perfect for cosy couple and family sessions in the snow.
