Velden sits at the western end of the Wörthersee, Carinthia’s best-known lake, famous for its warm, emerald water and its summer glamour. The Renaissance Schloss Velden stands right on the shore, the lakeside promenade is lined with villas and boathouses, and across the water the hills of the southern shore roll down to the lake.

It is one of Austria’s most sought-after places for summer weddings, with castle and villa venues, private jetties and boat transfers. Nearby, the twin churches of Maria Wörth on their peninsula and the lookout tower on the Pyramidenkogel add two more classic backdrops — ideal for proposals and couple sessions.

When to go

From late May to September the lake is warm and the evenings long — peak wedding season, with Velden at its liveliest in July and August. June and September give the same views with more space. Off-season the resort is quiet, with misty mornings and soft light.
