Drone filming in Velden am Wörthersee

A drone operator in Velden am Wörthersee is a pilot and filmmaker who captures aerial photos and video — of hotels, villas, the bay or an event — while following the European drone rules and Austria’s geographical zones. Over the lake the view is spectacular, but Velden is also a town of crowds. During the 2026 Velden Village bike week, held from 8 to 13 September, the event areas stretched across the Gemonaplatz, the Brunnenplatz, the Stadtpark opposite the Schlosshotel and a stage beside the castle, open Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00 to midnight. In the EU open category a drone may never be flown over an assembly of people, so on days like these aerial shots are planned away from the event mile, or not at all.

Every flight starts with a check of the Austro Control Dronespace map for the zone at the take-off point, and drones of 250 grams or more, or carrying a camera, must be registered. The pilot stays within 120 metres above ground, keeps the drone in sight and keeps a safe distance from people. A drone shoot in Velden typically takes one to two hours on site and delivers edited stills and clips. Around 8 September the sun sets at about 19.30, and the calm water just afterwards gives the clearest reflections.

A ship crossing the bay makes a strong moving subject. Agree any filming of a vessel and its passengers with the operator beforehand.

Good to know

Check Dronespace for the take-off point on the day of the flight; zones can change.
Avoid the event weeks for town-centre flights: during the bike week, Bubbles @ the lake or the Advent, crowds fill the areas you would fly over.
Fly the golden-hour sequence in the 30 minutes before sunset — around 19.00 to 19.30 in early September.
Carry proof of registration and insurance; a hotel or the municipality may ask to see them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly a drone over events in Velden?

No. In the EU open category drones may not be flown over assemblies of people. During events in Velden such as the bike week or the Advent, a drone operator films away from the crowds or uses ground cameras instead.

Does a drone operator in Velden need a permit?

Drones of 250 g or more, or with a camera, must be registered in Austria, and the pilot checks the geographical zones in Dronespace before each flight. Some zones in or near Velden may need a separate approval.

What does a drone shoot in Velden deliver?

Usually a set of edited aerial photos and several video clips of the property, the bay or the event, ready for website and social media. The drone operator in Velden agrees formats and delivery time in the quote.
