Drone filming in Graz

A drone operator in Graz is a registered pilot who films and photographs properties, venues, events and landscapes from the air and checks beforehand whether and how a flight is allowed at the location. In Graz three things decide most requests. First, the city has its own airport south of the centre, with an S-Bahn stop at Graz Airport-Feldkirchen, so geographical zones around it must be checked in Austro Control’s Dronespace map. Second, some sites have their own rules: the park regulations of Schloss Eggenberg ban drone flights across the whole site, so aerial footage of the palace is not an option. Third, many of the best city views include crowds – Advent markets, festivals, the Hauptplatz on a Saturday – and drones in the EU open category may not fly over assemblies of people.

Within those limits there is plenty to film: a company site or a villa with its garden, a vineyard estate in southern Styria, a wedding venue outside the centre. Operators flying a drone with a camera must be registered, keep it in sight and stay within 120 metres of the ground. On the Schöckl, the cable-car operator lists paragliding and hang-gliding among the activities, so the pilot watches the sky as well as the map. You receive edited clips and high-resolution stills, usually alongside a videographer’s ground footage.

    Vineyard estates in southern Styria

Rows of vines on steep hills look best from above in September and October, with long shadows in the late afternoon.

  2. 02

    Your property or company site

A slow fly-over shows the building, the garden and the surroundings in one shot – ideal for listings and company films.

    Schöckl plateau

Wide open ground above the city; flights here need extra attention because paragliders and hang-gliders use the mountain.

Good to know

  • Send the exact address or a map pin at least a week ahead, so the operator can check the zones around Graz Airport in Dronespace.
  • Do not plan aerial shots of Schloss Eggenberg: its park rules ban drone flights on the entire site.
  • Keep a backup day: drones stay on the ground in strong wind or rain, and the Schöckl is often windier than the city.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a drone operator to film over the Graz old town?

Only where the airspace zone allows it and no crowds are below. The open category forbids flying over assemblies of people, and the zones around Graz Airport are checked in Dronespace. The drone operator tells you which shots are realistic.

Is drone filming allowed at Schloss Eggenberg in Graz?

No. The park regulations of Schloss Eggenberg ban drone flights across the entire site. A drone operator in Graz will suggest other aerial subjects or combine ground footage of the palace park with drone shots elsewhere.

Does the drone pilot in Graz need to be registered?

Yes. In Austria, operators of drones of 250 g or more, or with a camera, must register. A professional drone operator in Graz is registered and flies within the EU open-category rules or with the authorisation a specific flight requires.
