Photographers in the Wachau
The Wachau is the stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of steep terraced vineyards, apricot orchards, castle ruins and wine villages. Dürnstein’s blue-and-white abbey tower, the golden baroque of Melk Abbey and the dry-stone walls of the Riesling terraces make it one of the most photogenic regions in Austria.
Less than an hour and a half from Vienna, it is a natural choice for vineyard weddings, winery celebrations and couple sessions among the vines. Spring brings the famous apricot blossom, autumn the grape harvest and golden slopes — and in between, long summer evenings by the river.

Photo spots in Wachau
- 01
Dürnstein
The abbey with its blue tower above the river and the castle ruin where Richard the Lionheart was held captive. The climb to the ruin gives a wide view over the Danube.
- 02
Melk Abbey
The vast baroque abbey on a rock above the river, with its park and terraces. Photography on the abbey grounds follows the abbey’s own rules, which are checked when planning.
- 03
Weißenkirchen & the Achleiten vineyards
Terraced Riesling slopes above the village, with paths between the stone walls and views up and down the valley. Best in the late afternoon.
- 04
Spitz & the Tausendeimerberg
A vineyard hill rising right out of the village, with the Hinterhaus ruin nearby. Quieter than Dürnstein and full of character.
- 05
The Danube shore
Gravel beaches, ferries and riverside paths give calm, natural backdrops. A boat between Melk and Krems adds river shots in season.
When to go
Apricot blossom turns the valley white for a short window, usually around late March or early April, depending on the weather. Summer is wedding season, with warm evenings by the river. September and October bring the grape harvest, golden terraces and the most popular light of the year.

Frequently asked questions
When is the apricot blossom in the Wachau?
Usually from late March to mid-April, but it shifts with the weather and lasts only a week or two. Photographers keep the date flexible and watch the forecast closely.
Can we take photos in the vineyards?
Public paths run through many vineyards, but the vines themselves are private farmland. Your photographer sticks to paths or arranges access with a winery, especially during the harvest.
Can we have a drone filming our vineyard wedding?
Drone flights in Austria follow EU rules: operators register, and depending on the location extra permission may be needed. Drone shots are only planned once the rules for your venue are confirmed.
