Family photographer in the Wachau
A family photographer in the Wachau is a photographer who photographs parents, children and often grandparents together outdoors in the Danube valley, keeping the session short and playful so that the pictures show how the family really is. The Wachau works well for families on holiday or on a day out from Vienna or St. Pölten, because a single afternoon can combine a riverbank, a village lane and a view from above without long drives.
For the view from above, the Jauerling is the place. The nature-park lookout stands at 960 metres, one of the highest points on the Danube, and its wooden tower is 38 metres tall; Lower Austria’s tourism board lists it as open from April to October between 9.30 am and 6 pm, and on fine weekends and holidays in the rest of the year. Cars park right in front, so small children do not face a long walk. A family session usually lasts 45 to 75 minutes, split between free play and a few calm group pictures, and you receive an edited online gallery. Late afternoon in May or September gives soft light without midsummer heat.

Location ideas in Wachau
- 01
Jauerling lookout
A wooden tower on the highest hill of the area with meadows and forest around it. Children can run in the open while the photographer works with the long view behind them.
- 02
Aggstein castle ruin
A ruin presumably founded by the Kuenringers in the early 12th century, high above the south bank. Older children love its walls and towers, and the castle runs a live puzzle game on site.
- 03
Danube promenade in Spitz
A flat riverside walk with benches and space for prams, the right place to finish the session with toddlers who are getting tired.
Good to know
- Book the Jauerling between April and October if you want the tower open; outside that window it opens only on fine weekends and holidays.
- Plan the session for 60 minutes before a meal or nap, not after it: children under five are at their best in the first 30 minutes.
- Dress in two or three soft colours that sit well with green vines and grey stone, and bring one spare top per child.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a family photo session in the Wachau take?
Usually 45 to 75 minutes. That is enough for play, a few calm group pictures and individual portraits, and short enough that small children stay happy throughout the family shoot.
Is the Jauerling lookout suitable for a family shoot with toddlers?
Yes. Parking is directly in front of the lookout, the meadows around it are open, and nobody has to climb the 38-metre tower for good pictures. The view over the Wachau works from the ground.
Can grandparents with limited mobility join a family shoot in the Wachau?
Of course. Choose flat places like the Spitz promenade or a village square, and the family photographer will plan the group pictures first while everyone still has energy.
