Wedding photographer in the Wachau
The Wachau, the Danube valley between Krems and Melk, is Austria’s wine-country wedding destination — about an hour from Vienna. Terraced vineyards climb the slopes above the river, villages like Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen are full of stone archways and old courtyards, and the baroque abbeys at Melk and Göttweig crown the hills. Couples celebrate in wineries, historic inns and courtyard venues, often with a drink among the vines before dinner.
The seasons shape the pictures: apricot blossom in early spring, lush green in summer and golden vines during the grape harvest in autumn. Send us your date, ceremony location and venue, and we check which photographers are free.

Location ideas in Wachau
- 01
Dürnstein and its blue tower
The blue-and-white abbey tower above the river and the castle ruin on the hill are the Wachau’s signature view. Morning and evening are calmer than midday.
- 02
Vineyard terraces
Dry-stone walls and rows of vines above the Danube give portraits depth and warm evening light. Vineyards are private land, so access is agreed with the winery.
- 03
Crossing the Danube
Small ferries cross the river between the villages, and cruise ships run along the valley in season — a memorable way to move between ceremony and reception.
- 04
Melk Abbey
The golden-yellow abbey high above the Danube is a magnificent backdrop. Photography rules on the abbey grounds are checked in advance.
Good to know
- Apricot blossom usually falls around late March to April, but it depends on the weather — keep the date flexible if it matters to you.
- Summer weekends bring cyclists and day trippers; plan portraits in quieter village lanes or in the vineyards.
- Allow time on the winding river road: the drive from Krems to Melk takes around half an hour.

Frequently asked questions
Can we have a free ceremony in a vineyard?
Many wineries offer this on their own grounds. The legally binding civil ceremony takes place via the registry office, which can sometimes also come to an outside location — this is checked when planning.
Is the Wachau a good choice for guests coming from Vienna?
Yes. It is about an hour by car, and the regional train runs along the valley, so guests can stay in Vienna or overnight in the villages.
