Product photographer in the Wachau

A product photographer in the Wachau is a photographer who creates clean packshots and styled images of products for web shops, price lists, trade fairs and labels – in this valley above all wine, apricot brandy, liqueurs and jams. Bottles are among the hardest objects to light: glass reflects everything, labels must stay sharp and readable, and the colour of a white wine has to look true on screen, so most of the work happens with controlled light on a table, either in a studio or set up in the winery.

Wachau wine labels also carry names that need to be legible. Vinea Wachau defines three styles for dry wines from its member wineries – Steinfeder with up to 11.5 % alcohol, Federspiel with no more than 12.5 % and Smaragd with at least 12.5 % – and the names are registered trademarks reserved for members, so a shop shot of a bottle line-up often shows exactly that range. The Wachauer Marille is an EU protected designation of origin, and producers use it on brandies and preserves as well. A product day usually covers 20 to 40 items on white plus a few styled set-ups; you receive cut-out files, consistent shadows and web and print sizes.

Good to know

  • Bring 2 perfect samples of every bottle with fresh labels; scratches and dust show up at full resolution.
  • Chill white wine to cellar temperature only if you want condensation – for clean packshots keep bottles at room temperature to avoid fogging.
  • Order shots so the Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd bottles of a line are lit identically; send the full list 5 days ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Can a product photographer work at our winery in the Wachau?

Yes. A product photographer sets up a small studio in your tasting room or cellar with lights, a table and a white backdrop, so packshots and styled pictures are made where the wine is.

What do Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd mean on Wachau wine labels?

They are the three Vinea Wachau styles for dry wines: Steinfeder up to 11.5 % alcohol, Federspiel up to 12.5 % and Smaragd from 12.5 %. Only member wineries may use the names, so the product photography should keep them readable.

How many products can be photographed in one day?

For simple packshots on white, around 20 to 40 products per day. Styled scenes in the cellar or vineyard take longer, so most product days in the Wachau combine both.
