Photographers in Vienna

Vienna gives photographers a lot to work with: imperial palaces and their gardens, the cobbled lanes around St. Stephen’s, Art Nouveau facades, coffee-house interiors and, a short tram ride away, vineyards with a view over the whole city.

It is the most requested place in Austria for proposals and holiday shoots, and a classic for weddings in palais venues. Locals book family and portrait sessions in the parks of the Prater, Augarten or along the Danube Canal.

Photo spots in Vienna

  1. 01

Schönbrunn Palace gardens & the Gloriette

The formal gardens lead up a hill to the Gloriette, with a sweeping view back over the palace and city. Calmest right after opening.

  2. 02

    Belvedere

Two baroque palaces facing each other across terraced gardens and fountains — symmetrical, grand and great in the late afternoon.

  3. 03

    Innere Stadt lanes

Narrow streets like Schönlaterngasse and the courtyards around St. Stephen’s Cathedral feel quiet in the early morning, even in summer.

  4. 04

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz

The church dome reflects in the pond in front of it — a favourite for evening shots when the facade is lit.

  5. 05

    Kahlenberg & the vineyards

On the edge of the Vienna Woods, with views over the Danube and the city skyline. Relaxed and less touristy, ideal for couples.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for long walks and give soft light. Summer means long evenings but busy landmarks — start early. From mid-November, the Christmas markets and festive lights make winter couple and family sessions popular.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a permit to shoot at Schönbrunn or Belvedere?

Rules differ between private and professional or commercial photography, and palace grounds manage this themselves. Your photographer checks the current conditions for the spot you choose and includes any fees in the plan.

What is the best time of day for photos in Vienna?

Early morning for empty streets and landmarks, and the last hour before sunset for warm light. Midday works well in shaded parks and courtyards.

Can we combine several spots in one session?

Yes, two or three nearby locations are realistic in one to two hours. The old town, Hofburg and Burggarten are within walking distance of each other.
