Drone filming and aerial photography in Vienna

A drone operator in Vienna is a registered pilot who flies a camera drone to capture aerial photos and video of properties, event venues, vineyards and city scenes, usually as part of a real estate listing, a brand film or a wedding video. In a capital city the flying itself is the smaller part of the job; most of the work is checking what the airspace and the ground beneath allow, and planning the shot to fit.

Vienna splits that permission in two. The Vienna Film Commission states that drone filming in Vienna is approved by Austro Control, while the take-off and landing site needs separate consent: on city-owned land through a filming permit from the Film Commission, on federal or private land from the owner, and for taking off from or flying over a public traffic area through a permit from the city’s traffic department MA 46. That is why operators ask for the exact address early and confirm only once every step is clear; some shots in the centre are not possible at all.

The river, the Danube Island and the Donau City skyline make strong establishing shots, where the airspace check allows a flight.

Good to know

  • Send a map pin of the exact take-off point at least three weeks ahead, so the operator can check whether the land is municipal, federal or private.
  • If the drone has to start from or cross a street or pavement, the MA 46 permit comes on top of the airspace approval, so choose a take-off point in a private garden or yard where possible.
  • Keep a backup date: drones stay grounded in strong wind or rain, and the open ground along the Danube catches more wind than the streets.

Frequently asked questions

Who approves drone filming in Vienna?

Drone flights for filming in Vienna are approved by Austro Control. The take-off and landing site needs separate consent from the landowner, from the Vienna Film Commission on city land, or from MA 46 for public traffic areas.

Can a drone fly over our wedding guests in Vienna?

No. Under the EU open category a drone may not fly over gatherings of people and must keep a safe distance from bystanders. The drone operator plans aerial shots from the side or above the empty venue.

Does a drone operator in Vienna need to be registered?

Yes. Operators of drones of 250 grams or more, or with a camera, must register in Austria. Your Vienna drone operator also flies within visual line of sight and no higher than 120 metres in the open category.
