Drone operator in Klagenfurt
A drone operator in Klagenfurt is a registered pilot who films and photographs from the air – for real estate, tourism, construction, events or a wedding film – and plans every flight around EU drone rules, Austrian geographical zones and the local situation. In Klagenfurt two things shape that planning. The city has its own airport, so the Austro Control Dronespace map has to be checked for each take-off point before a booking is confirmed; and on the east bay lies the Lendspitz-Maiernigg reserve, a Natura 2000 site since 2010 and since 2023 Carinthia’s sixth Ramsar wetland of international importance, covering about 77.6 hectares.
More than 180 bird species breed, rest or overwinter in Lendspitz-Maiernigg, among them kingfisher and black woodpecker, and boats are banned throughout the protected area. We found no published drone rule for the reserve, but we do not fly over it or its reed belts. Klagenfurt also takes drones seriously as a research field: building B13 in the Lakeside Park houses the university’s indoor drone hall. A typical drone job takes two to three hours on site, with a flight plan sent beforehand, and footage delivered in 4K within a week.

Location ideas in Klagenfurt & Wörthersee
- 01
East bay from the water side
Shot from a permitted take-off point, the bay shows the Strandbad jetties, the ship moorings and the length of the Wörthersee to the west.
- 02
Lendkanal line
From the air the canal reads as one straight line drawn from the old town to the lake – a strong opening for city and real estate films.
- 03
Old town rooftops
The Neuer Platz, the Stadtpfarrturm and the courtyards seen from above; city-centre flights need careful zone checks and distance from people.
Good to know
- Register as a drone operator if your drone weighs 250 g or more or carries a camera, and check the Dronespace map for every take-off point.
- In the open category, stay below 120 m, keep the drone in sight and never fly over crowds – on busy lido days that rules out the beaches.
- For calm, warm light over the lake in summer, fly early: on 21 June the sun rises around 5.10 in Klagenfurt.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fly a drone in Klagenfurt?
Drone flights in Klagenfurt are possible where the Austro Control Dronespace map shows no restriction for the take-off point. Because the city has an airport, a drone operator checks each location and, where a zone applies, the conditions for flying there before agreeing to a job.
Can you film the Lendspitz-Maiernigg reserve with a drone?
We do not fly over Lendspitz-Maiernigg. It is a Natura 2000 site and a Ramsar wetland with more than 180 bird species, and disturbance is exactly what its protection is meant to prevent. Aerial views of the east bay are taken from outside the reserve.
Can a drone film our wedding at the Wörthersee?
Yes, where the location allows it. The drone operator keeps a safe distance from guests, never flies over the group and plans short flights for arrival, the venue and the lake. On the water, the ship operator’s consent is needed too.
