Drone filming in Kitzbühel

A drone operator in Kitzbühel is a registered pilot who films and photographs from the air – chalets, hotels, events, landscapes and sports – and checks before each flight where and how high the drone may fly. Kitzbühel’s terrain makes one EU rule especially important: in the open category the drone must stay within 120 metres of the closest point of the earth’s surface. Because the Kitzbüheler Horn lifts climb about 1,200 metres from the valley to around 2,000 metres, a flight along a slope follows the terrain; a pilot cannot simply take off in town and rise to the height of the summit.

The other limit that shapes work here is crowds. Drones in the open category may never fly over assemblies of people, and Kitzbühel’s big dates – the Advent market in the old town, the Snow Polo World Cup on the Reither Wiese, the Hahnenkamm race weekend – draw exactly that. Before a booking, the pilot checks the UAS zones in Austro Control’s Dronespace map, asks the landowner or venue for consent, and plans take-off and flight path. A typical job delivers edited aerial clips in 4K and a set of stills; the exact deliverables and any permits are named in the quote.

01
Schwarzsee from above
The dark moor lake framed by meadows and forest is a classic aerial view. Fly early in the morning, before the lido fills with bathers.
02
Streif in summer
Without snow, the line of the downhill course through forest and meadow becomes visible from the air – subject to the landowner’s and operator’s consent.
03
Chalets in Reith and Aurach
An orbit around a single property shows its position, views and access in a way ground photos cannot. The pilot keeps a safe distance from neighbours.

Good to know

Allow at least two weeks before a commercial drone shoot so the pilot can check zones, ask for consent and, if needed, apply for an authorisation.
Plan aerials for the morning where possible: calm air gives smoother footage, and the pilot cancels if gusts on the ridges exceed the drone’s limits.
Mention events on your shoot date – during race week or the Advent market, the flight plan has to avoid the crowds entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Is drone filming allowed in Kitzbühel?

Yes, within EU and Austrian rules. A drone operator in Kitzbühel checks the UAS zones in the Dronespace map, keeps within 120 metres of the ground, never flies over crowds and gets the landowner’s consent before the flight.

Can you fly a drone at the Hahnenkamm race or Snow Polo?

Not over the spectators: drones in the open category may not fly over assemblies of people. Aerial shots of the event itself are a matter for the organiser; a hired drone pilot in Kitzbühel films your venue or guests away from the crowds.

Does the drone pilot need to be registered?

Yes. In Austria operators of drones with a camera, or weighing 250 g or more, must register. Before booking a drone operator in Kitzbühel, ask for the registration number and proof of insurance.
