Mondsee is known far beyond Austria for the yellow-fronted basilica where the wedding scene of The Sound of Music was filmed — and it remains a real parish church where couples marry. Around it, the market town has a compact square, a lakeside park with jetties and a choice of hotels and restaurants for the reception. The broad square in front of the basilica is ideal for the exit and group photos. Photography inside the church follows the parish’s rules, which are checked with the priest beforehand.

Jetties in the lakeside park
A few minutes’ walk from the square, wooden jetties and old trees frame the lake. Evening light from the west is soft and warm here.

Below the Drachenwand
Along the south-east shore the cliffs drop towards the water. A short drive for portraits with a wilder, more alpine feel.

Electric boats and rowing boats can be hired in summer — a calm interlude between the ceremony and dinner.
