Why the Sound of Music works so well for photos

For many visitors, especially from the US and Asia, Salzburg is first of all the city of The Sound of Music. The 1965 film used real places in and around the city, and most of them look much the same today: baroque gardens, a lakeside palace, a gazebo, an abbey above the old town and a pale yellow church on a lake in the Salzkammergut.

That makes them perfect for a photoshoot with a story. A couple can recreate a favourite scene, a family can bring a holiday tradition to life, or someone can plan a proposal in the gazebo garden. You do not have to be a superfan — the locations are beautiful in their own right — but if you are, a photographer who knows the film can help you find the exact angles.

Mirabell Gardens: the Do-Re-Mi steps and fountain

Mirabell Gardens is where Maria and the children finish singing Do-Re-Mi, and it is the easiest film location to photograph. The steps between the Pegasus fountain and the rose garden, the fountain itself, the green hedge tunnel and the dwarf garden all appear in the scene. The fortress on the hill frames the background beautifully.

The gardens are public and central, which also means they get busy. Early morning is by far the best time, when the flower beds are fresh and the steps are empty enough for a recreated jump. The Marble Hall inside Mirabell Palace is one of Austria’s best-known civil wedding venues, so Saturday mornings can see wedding parties in the garden too.

The gazebo in Hellbrunn Palace park

The glass gazebo from Sixteen Going on Seventeen originally stood at Leopoldskron; today it sits in the park of Hellbrunn Palace, a few kilometres south of the old town. It is a favourite for couples and proposals, with lawns and old trees around it.

The gazebo’s doors are usually kept closed, so the photos happen outside it — leaning on the glass, sitting on the steps, or walking hand in hand along the path. Hellbrunn’s park is calmer than Mirabell, and the palace with its trick fountains is right there if you want to make a morning of it. Check opening hours and seasonal access for the area you plan to use.

Leopoldskron, Frohnburg and Nonnberg: shoot with respect

Schloss Leopoldskron, with its terrace on the lake, stood in for the lake side of the von Trapp villa. It is a privately run hotel and seminar venue, so the grounds are for guests. The good news is that the classic view is from across the water: the public path on the far side of the Leopoldskroner Weiher gives you the palace, the lake and the mountains behind — lovely in the evening.

Schloss Frohnburg, used for the front of the villa, is used today by the Mozarteum university and is likewise photographed from the road. Nonnberg Abbey, where Maria is a novice, is an active Benedictine convent above the old town: you can walk up and photograph the setting and the view, but keep it quiet and discreet, especially near services.

  • Residenzplatz: the fountain Maria splashes in during I Have Confidence.
  • Mozartsteg: the footbridge over the Salzach seen in Do-Re-Mi.
  • Felsenreitschule: the festival concert scene; it is a performance venue, so access depends on events and tours.

Mondsee: the wedding church

The von Trapp wedding was filmed in the basilica of St. Michael in Mondsee, about half an hour east of Salzburg by car. Its yellow baroque facade on the market square is instantly recognisable, and the little town and lakeshore make a gentle backdrop for couples, engagement photos and even wedding portraits.

The basilica is a working parish church. Photos outside on the square are easy; inside, it is a place of worship, and any shoot there needs the parish’s agreement and should never disturb services or visitors who come to pray. Combining Mondsee with a lakeside walk makes a relaxed afternoon after a morning in the city.

How to plan a Sound of Music photoshoot route

A realistic plan is Mirabell Gardens at sunrise, a short walk across the Mozartsteg to Residenzplatz and up towards Nonnberg, then a drive or bus ride to Hellbrunn for the gazebo. Leopoldskron from across the lake fits best at the end of the day. Mondsee is its own half-day, or a stop on the way to or from the Salzkammergut.

Let your photographer know which scenes matter to you most, and whether you want a playful recreation — the jumps on the steps, a twirl in the gazebo garden — or simply beautiful photos at the locations. Outfits in soft blues, greens and creams sit nicely in the gardens; a dirndl or tracht is a fun nod to the film if you have one.

Best time of year and day

Spring and early summer bring the flower beds at Mirabell to their best and keep the gardens green. Autumn is calmer and softly lit, and the Advent season adds festive lights to the old town. Summer is the busiest period, especially during the festival weeks, so the earlier you start, the better.

Whatever the season, the first hours after sunrise give you the gardens with few people, and the evening is ideal for Leopoldskron and the Salzach riverbank. If you would like to see your own story among these places, send us a request and we will connect you with photographers who know Salzburg.
