Salzburg is small enough that you can walk from your hotel to almost any proposal spot, and romantic enough that nobody looks twice at a couple stopping for the view. The best places are slightly above the old town: the viewpoints on Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg look down over domes, rooftops and the fortress, and they are calmer than the gardens and bridges below.

Send us your dates, the spot you are considering and whether your partner suspects anything. We pass it on to a photographer who will agree a time, a signal and a hiding place with you, then photograph the question and a short portrait walk afterwards.

Kapuzinerberg viewpoint
A short climb of steps from the right bank leads to a terrace overlooking the old town and fortress. Morning light comes from behind you, so faces are lit and the city glows.

Mönchsberg at golden hour
Reach the cliff-top paths by the lift from Gstättengasse or on foot. Evening light warms the domes, and the wooded paths give the photographer easy cover.

The Hellbrunn pavilion
The glass gazebo from the famous musical stands in the park at Hellbrunn, south of the centre. A sweet choice for fans; arrive early, as it is a popular photo stop.

Makartsteg at dusk
The footbridge is covered in love locks. Bring your own lock with your initials and propose as you attach it, with the old town lighting up behind you.

Good to know

Festival season in July and August fills the old town; an early morning proposal avoids the crowds.
The paths on Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg are steep in places — plan shoes that work for both of you.
Have a rain plan: the arcaded passages of the old town make a sheltered alternative.
