Elopement photographer in Graz

An elopement photographer in Graz is a photographer who plans and photographs a very small wedding – just the two of you, or a handful of guests – on one of the hills around the city, and who helps with the route, the timing and the weather plan. Graz offers two quite different summits. The Fürstenstand is the top of the Plabutsch, at 754 m the highest point in the west of the city, named after a climb by Archduke Johann and Emperor Franz I in 1830; a new steel-and-wood lookout tower was built there in 2023/2024, and the view reaches into West, South and East Styria and as far as Slovenia. The Fürstenstand also appears on the city’s list of places already checked for civil ceremonies.

The Schöckl, Graz’s local mountain, is reached by cable car from St. Radegund, with RegioBus 250 running from Jakominiplatz to the valley station. Its open plateau gives wide views in every direction, and more than 40 km of paths cross the mountain. A typical elopement here runs three to four hours: a first look at the valley station, the ride up, vows on the plateau, portraits and a toast at one of the huts. If you want the legal ceremony on the same day, do it first at the Rathaus or a listed venue and keep the mountain for the symbolic part.

Good to know

  • From November to February the Schöckl cable car runs until 4:30 pm, and the sun sets around 4:10 pm in December – plan winter vows for midday.
  • In summer the last regular ride is at 5 pm on weekdays and 6 pm at weekends, while sunset is around 8:55 pm in June; the tourism board lists trips outside regular hours on request.
  • The operator publishes its hours as valid weather permitting, so keep the Plabutsch or a second day as a backup when wind is forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Can we legally marry on a hill above Graz?

The Fürstenstand on the Plabutsch is on the list of places the city has checked for civil weddings, so a legal ceremony there is possible once the venue confirms. On the Schöckl plateau, an elopement in Graz is a symbolic ceremony after the civil one.

How do we get to the Schöckl for an elopement without a car?

RegioBus 250 runs from Jakominiplatz in Graz to the valley station of the Schöckl cable car in St. Radegund. Allow extra time in wedding clothes and agree the meeting point with your elopement photographer at the bus stop.

What is the best season for an elopement near Graz?

Late spring and early autumn give mild temperatures and long light on the hills around Graz. Summer evenings are the longest, while winter elopements need a midday slot because the Schöckl cable car stops earlier and the sun sets soon after four.
